Citizen Journalism VS Citizen Criticism

24 11 2013

It get to my attention or rather I say, my annoyance, after reading a very disturbing a so-called-journalistic-article. The pathetic part is that the article isn’t even about brutal homicide nor corruptions (well that’s disturbing too), but about a charity event that turns into kissing galore and the particular so-called-journalist wrote it as if its a really newsworthy. But, seriously, editor/moderator, your role is important to make sure the articles is worth reading/watching and not simply a narrow opinion of particular persons. Without justifying that the kissing galore event morally or socially right/wrong, what the writer wrote should not exposing one opinion to another.

I have no objection for citizen journalism. I myself studied mass communication, an advertising and PR practitioner, a writer and also happened to be involved organizing journalist workshop, be friended with few journalists, editors, and journalism scholars in ASEAN countries.

Well, in my humblest opinion, even if a journalist dislike or opposed to the fact in the field, news angle defined your media credibility. Especially if you related to one of the biggest-and-longest-run media. Let me quote: « Journalistic integrity is based on the principles of truth, accuracy and factual knowledge. » So yes, just for the sake of high traffic readership, these principle should not be ignored (for the namesake of citizen journalism) but should withstand firmly in every articles.

A definition of Citizen Journalism by Courtney C. Radsch, says, « as an alternative and activist form of newsgathering and reporting that functions outside mainstream media institutions, often as a repose to shortcoming in the professional journalistic field, that uses similar journalistic practices but is driven by different objectives and ideals and relies on alternative sources of legitimacy than traditional or mainstream journalism. » However, unlike the professional journalism failures might have, I think I have to say that I agreed that if it’s not moderated well with a highly capable editor, citizen journalism would becoming unregulated, too subjective, amateurish, and haphazard in quality and coverage.

Anyway how, it only proof me that not everybody can be a journalists without learning (at least basic) journalism. Oh plus, what is more important is that I think we have to agree to that these day reader need to be smarter too when digesting a news coverage. Otherwise, it will turn into nothing but a spoof.
